Goodbye CORGI, hello Gas Safe Register

The current gas installer registration scheme operated by CORGI is to be replaced by a new scheme operated by Capita on 1 April 2009. The new scheme, called Gas Safe Register, will be the only scheme approved by the Health & Safety Executive under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998. All installers working on domestic and non-domestic gas installations should be registered and will need to be registered in the future.

The new scheme will maintain a register of gas installers qualified to install or repair gas fittings and appliances. As CORGI did previously, the scheme will check gas fitters’ competence, inspect the work of gas installers and deal with complaints about unsafe gas work.

Therefore, after the 1 April 2009, gas consumers should only have work done by Gas Safe Register approved installers and should check their ID cards for evidence of their registration.

A campaign to advise consumers on these changes will start in March 2009. The contract between Capita and the HSE is for 10 years and so we will all have to get used to the name change. CORGI is to continue offering a range of services to gas installers, members of the public and landlords, but will not operate the HSE approved scheme.
