CLEATOR MOOR AND DISTRICT FAIRTRADE STEERING COMMITTEE

Regen North East Copeland and Cleator Moor group supports Copeland Borough Councils aims for Fairtrade practices in assisting developing countries.

Dear local business:

As part of an ongoing commitment to help developing countries, Copeland Borough Council has made a commitment to support Fairtrade.

Our town Cleator Moor falls under this banner.  As a Committee, we have also made that commitment to implement Fairtrade practices in the town and its district.

So what is Fairtrade?

Most food producers in the Developing World are paid so little that they are unable to feed their children adequately, pay fees for education or health care and as a result, children, grow up malnourished and people die needlessly as a result.

There is now an alternative, the Fairtrade movement empowers citizens to campaign for an international trade system based on justice and fairness by using sustainable pricing policies.  This enables communities to put in wells for clean water, they may employ a teacher for their children or they may build a maternity ward.

So, how can we help?  Over the next few weeks, one of our representatives will call at a sample of local service businesses and offer free samples of Fairtrade tea/coffee.   We are asking the businesses to support the movement by offering their customers and clients Fairtrade refreshments.     In return we ask you to display the Fairtrade sticker in a prominent place to gain the support of customers and residents.     By participating in this initiative we are hoping to gain awareness so that residents/businesses will possibly buy Fairtrade products when they next visit the Supermarkets and businesses will possibly go on to provide their customers/clients with Fairtrade refreshments.

You will note that Fairtrade products carry the Fairtrade Mark.   This mark guarantees that the food producers were paid fairly.  In such simple ways as changing our shopping habits we can improve the lives of these people.   If you have any queries, please contact Alan Hurton on 01946 816708 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
