Parish Lengthsman Scheme Saved !

Regen NE Copeland has used funds provided by our parish councils to save the Parish Lengthsman scheme and its employee who carries out the roadside and pavement area cleaning and maintenance for our regeneration area.

Since February, the parishes of NE Copeland have benefitted from their own Parish Lengthsman called Alan.  He has been on hand to carry out all the jobs identified by the local community that never seem to get done.  Works 4 You company employs Alan and this employment is supported by regeneration funds. Alan has cleaned, cleared, trimmed, strimmed, picked up litter and generally improved our local environment for all the community to enjoy.

The Lengthsman scheme was set up with funding from RNEC and Cumbria County Council with the help of Dave Smith.  It has been running successfully and responding to the Parishes needs throughout the year, but funding was due to finish at the end of December.  This would have meant not only losing the Parish Lengthsman with all his experience, but also losing a local job.  Regen NE Copeland is supported by the local parishes and has been able to use some of those funds to help maintain the scheme until 31st March 2009, providing time to plan for the future.

Sarah Mitchell, Regeneration Manager says “Our Directors took the decision to save the scheme at our Board meeting last week, as our local parishes were very concerned at the possible loss of such a valuable resource that is helping them to respond to local requests”.

Sheila Moffat from Works 4 You is delighted at being able to continue to provide such as useful service.  “Alan has proved to be a real asset to our team.  I am delighted that we can extend his contract through the winter season.”
