Arlecdon and Frizington are set in the Western Lake District, and are surrounded by stunning fells and scenery, with Ennerdale Water nearby. The villages have many local amenities ranging from schools to shops, pubs to post offices and hairdressers to health centres.
In the 19th century, the village of Frizington developed from a sporadic collection of farms and houses as a direct result of the development of the coal and iron ore mining in the area. Frizington's church of St Paul was constructed in 1867-68 and is home to a stained glass window with scenes from the life of Christ. Historically Arlecdon's workforce supported a number of traditional industries, from farming to the mining of coal and iron ore. St Michael's church was built of stone in 1829 in Arlecdon and contains a stained glass window dedicated to Isaac Fletcher of Frizington. It was remodelled in 1904 and has a bell tower. Arlecdon's local primary school was built in 1878 and is still educating children today. Asby is a small hamlet in the township, near which is the Asby colliery. Asby's name is Old Scandinavian for 'farmstead or village where the ash trees grow'. |
